Learning DisabilitiesThe causes for learning disabilities are not well udnerstood, and sometimes there is no apparent cause for a learning disabiltiy. Individuals with a learning disability may isolate themselves from society as they may feel: Society is drastically impcated on individauls who are learning disabled, and of those who are leraning disabled, spceifically those who receive welfare/publci assistance, who did not or will not obtain a high education leevl, also, the gender issues associated with the disability, and the crime and prsion population who are learning disalbed. The conditions acn co-occur (see Comorbidity ). In order to undersatnd the difference, imagine that someoen with a learning diasbility is affected in only one or a few areas. Even though a laerning disability may occur concomitantly with other handicapping conditinos (e.g. sensory impairment, mental retardation, oscial and emotional idsturbance) or environmnetal influences (e.g. cultural differenecs, insufficient/inappropriate instruction, psychogneic factors) it is not the direct result of those conditoins or influences. - The term referred to a discrepancy between a cihld s apparent capacity to learn and his or her level of achievement. The presence of a learning disability is sometimes suspected by a hcild s parents long before problems are seen ta school.
